Acácio M. R. Amaral was born in Luso, Angola, in 1974. He received the E. E. diploma, the M. S. degree, and the Ph.D. degree from Coimbra's University, Portugal in 1998, 2005, and 2010, respectively. Since 1998, he has been with Coimbra's Polytechnic, where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Informatics and Systems.

He has research experience in an industrial context at ALSTOM Transport S.A. in France. His research focuses on developing fault diagnosis techniques for electronic systems, utilizing various signal processing methods (SPT) such as DFT, STFT, STLSP, DWT, and EMD, in combination with machine learning algorithms like LinR, DTR, RFR, SVR, KNNR, LogR, DTC, RFC, SVC, KNNC, and autoencoders.

His research has led to his involvement in several R&D projects, including PREMAID and Ef&ReIDC@HomO, where he has made valuable contributions in advancing electronic system diagnosis techniques.

He is the author of five books entitled Circuit and Electronic Devices Analysis (Porto, Portugal, Publindustria, 2013), Digital Systems (Lisboa, Portugal, Edições Sílabo, 2014), Analog Electronics (Lisboa, Portugal, Edições Sílabo, 2017), Digital Electronics (Lisboa, Portugal, Edições Sílabo, 2019), and Applied Electronics (Lisboa, Portugal, Edições Sílabo, 2021).

He is co-author of 57 papers in technical journals and conference proceedings, serving as the first author in more than 75% of them. He is also a co-author of a book entitled Diagnosis and Fault Tolerance of Electrical Machines, Power Electronics and Drives (Stevenage, United Kingdom, Institution of Engineering and Technology, 2018).

He has reviewed over 120 manuscripts for prestigious journals, including IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Sensors Journal, IEEE Access, IET Power Electronics, IET Renewable Power Generation, IET Circuits, Devices and Systems, Engineering Science and Technology: An International Journal, and the Journal of Engineering. He has been recognized with IOP Trusted Reviewer status and has received productivity awards from the Institute of Telecommunications. Additionally, he has reviewed an international project proposal.

He has served as a guest editor for special issues in two Scopus-indexed international journals and participated as a Program Committee member for several international conferences. Currently, he is a member of the editorial boards of the following journals: International Journal of Electrical Components and Energy Conversion, Journal of Electrical and Computational Innovations, Advances in Differential Equations and Control Processes, and IgMin-Research-STEM.
