Professor Hyun-Joong Kim has been working at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Seoul National University, Republic of Korea since 1999. He has contributed to the development of the adhesive science and bioplastics science through academic research and lectures on adhesive science and bio-composite materials (bioplastics) and industry-academic cooperation, and has introduced leading academics. And also, he has contributed to the bio-composite material and bioplastics industry and has accumulated academic achievements for eco-friendliness by applying biodegradable materials and applied industries.
In addition, he has derived active industry-academic research projects and government projects with approximately 380 domestic and foreign industries, and based on this, he has published 54 domestic and foreign books, 250 SCI papers, and 97 domestic papers, contributing greatly to strengthening the competitiveness of industry based on various academic data and technologies. While working at the university, he has also made efforts to train future generations, producing 40 masters and 31 doctors. He received his BS (February 1987) and MS (February 1989) from Seoul National University, and his Ph.D. (March 1995) from the University of Tokyo, Japan. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher (1995-1996) at the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA, and as a Research Scientist (1996-1999) at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is currently a professor at Seoul National University.
Prof. Kim is a founding member of the World Congress on Adhesion Phenomena related Adhesion (WCARP, 1998), and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award (2025) for his contribution to the founding of the Korean Society of Adhesion and Interfaces (April 2000) and the Asian Conference on Adhesion (ACA, 2005), as well as his 30 years of active academic activities at the Japan Society of Adhesion and for establishing close international cooperation with the Korea-China-Japan and Asia-European Adhesion societies. He was selected as a full member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (2007), a distinguished fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS) (2008), and is the fourth distinguished fellow after the International Congress of Chemistry & Environment (2003).
- Development of eco-friendly adhesive materials for semiconductors, displays, and mobile phones, and adhesives for automotive structures, for LNG ships, which are liquefied natural gas carriers, and adhesive materials for LH^2 ships, which are liquefied hydrogen carriers used at ultra-low temperatures of -253^oC.
- In addition, he is mainly conducting research on eco-friendly bio-composites and bio-plastics.
